Exceptionally a review in English for a book I read in French, simply because I feel that Alphonse Daudet and his Lettres de mon moulin (Letters from My Windmill) should be better known abroad. I hadn't read them since, in my childhood, my mother read them to me while I was in bed, ready to sleep.

In 1866, Daudet's Lettres de mon moulin (Letters from My Windmill), written in Clamart, near Paris, and alluding to a windmill in Fontvieille, Provence, won the attention of many first of his longer books, Le petit chose (1868), did not, however, produce popular sensation. It is, in the main, the story of his own earlier years told with much grace and pathos.
Alphonse Daudet's novels established him as the most successful writer in France by the end of the XIX century; but it was the LETTERS, first published in book form in 1869, which remained his favourite creation and has proved his most lasting. Throughout his working life in Paris Daudet never lost his almost umbilical attachment to Provence.
